Antioch College Continuation Corporation Effort Toward College Independence Moves Ahead

Efforts toward exploring the feasibility of separating Antioch College from Antioch University are moving ahead this month, with directors of the recently-formed Antioch College Continuation Corporation, or AC3, expressing cautious optimism that they will achieve their goal.

The college’s best-known alum is Coretta Scott King, widow of slain civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Antioch is also the alma mater of “Twilight Zone” creator Rod Serling. Then there are lesser-known names, such as Robert Manry, who sailed a 13-foot sailboat across the Atlantic Ocean.

Last week more than half of the 350 students, faculty and staff members on the Antioch College campus passed a community referendum that included a vote of no confidence for Antioch University Chancellor Toni Murdock and an endorsement of establishing a self-governing college independent of the university.

The faculty of Antioch College has this week voted no confidence in Toni Murdock, chancellor of the university, following her dismissal of the college’s president and reorganization of the college’s fund raising operations — changes that the faculty said should have involved consultation with the faculty and did not.

Antioch College President Was Ousted

Last week’s announcement that Antioch University’s board was open to considering a plan to avoid suspending the operations of Antioch College brought uncharacteristic peace to a campus where many students, professors and alumni distrust the central university administration and board. The distrust is back.

Fundraising Update

As of today, the Alumni Association has raised nearly $18 million in gifts and pledges from hundreds of donors eager to secure the future of Antioch College.

The elected Antioch College Alumni Association Board of Directors continue to negotiate with the University Board of Trustees to establish an autonomous Board of Trustees for Antioch College, and to protection of assets of Antioch College for sole use of Antioch College.
