Throughout his life, Ben Drake was fundamentally a student and educator. From his high school years in Bronxville, NY, through college at Antioch in Ohio and the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and continuing with teaching positions at the University of Washington in Seattle and Kenyon College in Gambier, OH, Ben dedicated himself to education.
His passion for learning and teaching extended into community work with the Community Nutrition Institute, the Environmental Defense Fund, and the Highlander Center in Tennessee.
Until his final days, Ben remained absorbed in books, intellectual pursuits, and outdoor activities. He died after a brief illness on February 27, 2025, at his home in Peachtree City, Georgia, surrounded by family. He was 91 years old.
Born in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, on July 15, 1933, Ben was preceded in death by his parents Margaret Jenkins Drake and Lawrence Drake, along with siblings Byron Drake and Sheila Drake Andrews.
He is survived by his partner Barbara Strome; daughter Emily Christiansen and granddaughters Lauren and Kaylin; son Jesse (Mimi) Buck and grandchildren Ted, Perry, and Alaina; niece Lori Andrews; nephew Bruce Andrews; goddaughter Kate Bassett; and numerous friends and family members.
Per Ben’s wishes, no community service was held.
