Gordon Cowperthwaite (September 18, 1924 – November 11, 2024) passed away at age 100 at Friends Care Community in Yellow Springs.
Gordon graduated from Antioch College in autumn 1945 with a BA in business administration. At Antioch, he formed a swing quintet, playing at Antioch’s Night Club events. He married fellow student Ruth Fortner in 1947, and they lived in the infamous “Splinterville” where Rod and Carol Serling were their neighbors.
A lifelong jazz enthusiast and drummer, Gordon spent his career in advertising and education, working 24 years at Rike-Kumler department store in Dayton and 25 years at Sinclair Community College. He was deeply involved in Yellow Springs community organizations including Tecumseh Land Trust, Glen Helen Association, and the Yellow Springs Arts Council.
He is survived by his two daughters, Leslie and Jennifer.
