James W. “Jim” Gough, 74, a longtime Brooklyn resident, passed away on July 11, 2024, at Mt. Sinai Hospital after a prolonged illness.

Born January 30, 1950, in Schenectady, New York, Jim was the son of William “Bill” and Gretchen “Peggy” Gough, adventurous world travelers. During his teenage years, he attended high school in Bogata, Colombia, becoming fluent in Spanish and developing a deep appreciation for Latin America.

Jim earned his B.S. in chemistry from Antioch College (1973) and his M.D. from New York University School of Medicine (1977). As a medical student, he advocated for tuition-free education, eventually helping establish full-tuition scholarships that NYU Medical School now offers all students.

Following pediatric training at Montefiore Hospital and the MLK Health Center in the South Bronx, Jim established a private pediatric practice while serving as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at SUNY Health Sciences Center at Brooklyn. He held fellowships with the American Academy of Pediatrics and served on the Brooklyn Pediatric Society board.

Beyond medicine, Jim cherished his wife Maria Gomez Gough, his extended family, and summer adventures featuring hiking, camping, and storytelling.

Jim is survived by Maria, children Marino, Massiel, Gretchen, Juan Carlos, and William “Billy,” plus eight grandchildren.
